The English Cemetery in Malaga

The English Cemetery in Malaga

The English Cemetery in Malaga established in 1831,and is the oldest cemetery for non-Roman Chatolic Christians in mainland Spain.                                                                                                                                                                                         The cemetery grounds have also been home to St George´s Anglican Church since 1891.                                                                                                                                    In Malaga, bodies of non-Roman Catholies weren´t permitted to be interested by day,but had to be taken down to the seashore at night and buried in an upright position in the sand and then left to the mercy of the waves and the dogs. When Williams Marks was apponted,Consul in Malaga,he British set about the task of obtaining a piece of land to serve as an English Cemetery. Finally,in 1829,he was granted a plot of waste land by the Malaga authorities. The English Cemetery became a reality with the original walled cemetery being built in 1831.One of the first people to be buried within the walled cemetery was Robert Boyd, executed in Malaga for his part is an abortive liberal uprising in December 1831.                                                  For 175 years the English Cemetery was administered by successive British Consuls, initially with some financial support from the Brithish Govenmert. In 2006 ownership of the cemetery was transfered to The English Cemetery in Malaga Foundation, a Spanish Charity established to preserve, maintain and administer the cemetery as part of Malaga´s historic heritage. For all intents and purposes the cemetery now relies entirely on private donations for its maintenance and preservation. In the English Cemetery of Malaga we can find a lot of famous people buried: Robert Boyd, executed in Malaga together with General José Maria Torrijos and 50 others for his part in an abortive uprising for the liberal cause in 1831.Jorge Guillen,a Spanish poet.Gamel Woolsey and Gerald Brenan, authors.
